Arabic language lessons

As commonly known, all religious source material in Islam is in Arabic. The special characteristics of the language as well as the extensive vocabulary were the reason why Allah chose Arabic over other languages for his message. The language lays the groundwork for learning the traditions of Muslims and the rituals of worship in Islam. For this reason, language plays a big role in intercultural communication amongst Muslims of different races and languages.

Without sufficient knowledge of the Arabic language, it is not possible to understand the Koran and the Sunna of the Prophet. Evidence of this fact can be found in the Koran:

“Indeed, we have made it an Arabic Koran for you to understand!”

The following was narrated by Umar Bin Al-Khattab:

“Learn Arabic as the language is part of your religion!”

Therefore, the great Muslim scholars used to master the Arabic language studies. This underlines the importance of Arabic for every Muslim. Language is the tool to transmit the culture of every nation and is similar to a database for traditions and literature. An Arabic author of the 20th century defines the language as one’s home country. Thus all nations try to preserve their language and regulate the linguistic usage to protect the own identity from dying out.

The foundation of the Arabic School became necessary for several reasons. On the one hand the number of Muslims in Erlangen is increasing. On the other hand, the fast pace of life resulted in Muslim families diverting their attention from the importance of teaching Arabic to their children although the Arabic language plays a significant role for Muslims. The idea of founding an Arabic school was launched in the end of the 90s. In the beginning less than 30 students were taking part. In the meanwhile, the number has multiplied by four. The Arabic school had to overcome many obstacles and to shift locations several times. Today the Arabic school is located at OHM-Gymnasium am Röthelheim 60, 91052 Erlangen. Teachers are chosen carefully, special training courses for improving the didactical skills of the teachers are offered regularly, teaching methods and techniques are constantly being improved to take in account the language levels of the students as well as the goals of the community. The Arabic School welcomes all children from the age of six even if Arabic is not their native language. Children are split into eight different groups depending on age and language level.
